Hey there mCommunity! 👋

Beth here, reaching out with a quick tip on tapping into Reddit content with your Explore searches. Reddit is immensely popular for many reasons — diverse content, community-driven discussions, the upvoting/downvoting system that allows users to surface the most relevant and popular content —so we want to make the most of it when analyzing social data!

Often times the default method for creating a new search starts with keywords and phrases. For example, if we wanted to begin to uncover trends and feedback in the makeup industry, I may start by building out a search that looks something like this:

("makeup" OR "make up") AND ("lipstick" OR "eyeshadow" OR "blush" OR "foundation" OR "concealer" OR "mascara" OR "eyeliner" OR "primer" OR "highlighter" OR "bronzer" OR "setting powder" OR "setting spray" OR "lip gloss" OR "lip liner" OR "brow pencil" OR "brow gel" OR "contour" OR "translucent powder" OR "BB cream" OR "CC cream" OR "makeup remover" OR "lash curler" OR "makeup sponge")

Now let’s take this one step further by identifying our top Subreddits. Subreddits are online topical communities where rich conversations are already taking place, often serving as hubs for enthusiasts, experts, and consumers, providing a holistic view of the topic at hand. Building on our search above, let’s navigate to Analytics → Top Subreddits.

Here, I will find a list of the Subreddits that are mentioning my makeup terms the most, including spaces like r/MakeupAddiction and r/beauty.  To create a search for these Subreddits, I simply use the sourceName: operator like this -

sourceName:r/MakeupAddiction OR sourceName:r/Makeup OR sourceName:r/beauty OR sourceName:r/beautytalkph OR sourceName:r/30PlusSkinCare OR sourceName:r/MakeupRehab

Now, instead of searching across the entirety of the Meltwater social and editorial database, I can focus on identifying trending content, products and themes in these specific affinity communities:

By going beyond the usual keyword route and tapping into these subreddit communities, we can unlock deeper insights that can help shape our understanding of different perspectives, identify trends, and dig deeper into topics that matter most to the community. I hope this helps guide your next search!
