Use this format to share your boolean (the example included is a search for Food Bank for New York City created with the AI Search Assistant and is meant for illustrative purposes only):

I didn’t know before that I could get the AI Search Assistant to translate my terms and keywords! I added Spanish translations - do you think there are any other languages I should include?

Now that you’ve got your mission, it’s time to embark on the adventure of a lifetime! And don’t forget to share your Brand & Campaign Search in the comments 👇

Hey, not sure, why you have kept ND "Cincinnati" AND "Ohio" along with you main search keywords! Won’t it restrict some of your search results?

I’m not sure, good question! That is what AI had suggested, but it’s a good thought/question to consider

Hi @abbyben10! I love your chosen organization as I’m a Christian myself! To answer your question, you can exclude other organizations by using “NOT”. For example, (Fellowship of Christian Athletes OR FCA) NOT (Financial Conduct Authority OR Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). I hope this helps!

Great feedback, @MeganJMF - I would just call out that you’ll want to make sure that full phrases are placed in quotation marks, so this example would become:

("Fellowship of Christian Athletes" OR "FCA") NOT ("Financial Conduct Authority" OR "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles")

Although in this particular case, it might not be a bad idea to exclude some of those words individually as well:

("Fellowship of Christian Athletes" OR "FCA") NOT ("Financial Conduct Authority" OR caseSensitive:(Fiat) OR Chrysler OR "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles")

I included the caseSensitive operator for Fiat, since it’s possible that the word itself might show up in valid results, but when capitalized it’s likely to refer to the brand name.

@Jacinda Espinosa - I have a question about the timing of this program. This Mcommunity post mentions it starts at Noon EST. However, a reminder email I got since I signed up (from @Zach_Lepard ) , says it starts at 11:00 am EST. Is someone able to confirm what time it starts in eastern? I think with daylight saving just happening in my area, I’m not positive what time it starts - not sure if I should tune in at 11am or noon EST. Thanks!

Hi Maria!!

Thank you for flagging this, the workshop will begin at 11:00am EST, there may have been some confusion with daylight savings happening this week but 11:00 EST am will be our kick off :)

Great, thanks @Zach_Lepard

For me, I learned that between ChatGPT and the Platform Assistant I can create really complex nd advanced boolean strings that will offer a lot of precision to my searches. That’s really powerful!

@DEClarke Great job on this comprehensive query! I completely agree that AI platforms like Meltwater’s assistant and ChatGPT are powerful tools. ChatGPT even provided insights on my organization's expansion into Spanish-speaking mental health programs—something I wouldn’t have known otherwise! 😁

Great work on this! I would also add or specify the location in the search or the specific name of the campaign that Active Minds is currently running.

First off, I want to say a big thank you for the workshops this week and a special thank you to the Boolean doctors for the lesson today. I feel it was the best hour of Boolean education I’ve had with Meltwater and the Brand Search Checklist is already bookmarked!

The charity I picked for the Race to the Summit is one I wanted to track based on some connections with my organization over the past month. After building my boolean this afternoon, I realized there is a developing mini-crisis for that organization, so it should work out well for the rest of the assignments in the race this month.

  • Any tips or tricks you discovered/learned from creating this search? Any specific feedback you’re looking for?
The Brand Search Checklist helped me remember to look for translations, product names and organization leaders. We run into that when a partner organization has a crisis situation and the checklist is a helpful reminder to take care of some of those details in the initial search. Today’s discussion in the workshop on acronyms was also really helpful and this exercise gave me a chance to work on that and find some tools that will help with my own organization’s searches. We have a separate social media team, but there is overlap when it comes to monitoring social media beyond our accounts. I’m curious going forward to learn more about specific social monitoring of another organization and comments within their accounts in a crisis. I noticed a very close connection in something so far in this exercise to something I deal with quite often and this is going to a great learning opportunity!

Hi @amecham. This is a great question. Try adding in some NOTs for what you don’t want included, i.e. “Bow Foodbank” NOT (“Bow Foodbank London” OR “London”). That may help.

Thanks Clarke! Will try that. The advanced Boolean workshop yesterday also gave me some good tips, so I think I’m on track. Cheers!

Hi @amecham! Love the organization you chose! This one is super tricky. I tested a basic query - ("Bow Foodbank") OR ("Foodbank" AND "Bow") OR ("Food bank" AND "Bow") - but none of the 18 mentions were about Bow Foodbank. They just included both the words “bow” and “foodbank.” I would stick the query into Meltwater’s AI assistant or ChatGPT and explain the issue if you haven’t already. Maybe try including their social media handles in the query as well. I hope this is helpful!

Thank you, Megan! I will try that and that is a fantastic tip about including social handles.

I believe there are other organizations that use the FCA acronym and I was wondering how to exclude them if I just want to do a general query and not include the keywords.

We actually work closely with another FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) - maybe include some “NOT” statements like “NOT “Financial Conduct Authority” or “NOT “Regulator”.

@DEClarke - This is based on your subscription, and it means you've used all of your saved searches that you have as part of your subscription. You can use one of your saved searches (if you are able to share the content publicly and bring awareness to your brand/company. Or see if there is a search not being used that you can delete.

@Maria Dehne - were there any suggestions the AI Search Assistant gave you for your search that were unexpected? I’d love to know if it helped you catch or reframe something! 👀

@amecham - looks like you’ve gotten some good recs for narrowing down your search - be sure to follow up and let us know if you’re still stymied, or ask in this week’s live session! ✨

@MeganJMF - I love your advice to @amecham about asking the AI Search assistant for help focusing the search! I personally have a tendency to just use the Assistant as a fancy-pants thesaurus and always forget to ask for targeted help like that. This is such a great example of how to effectively use AI for someone like me who just struggles with being creative with my prompts 💕

Totally agreed with your point on using the AI assistant! I haven’t really used it in that way before, but it’s a great idea.

The AI Search Assistant is extremely helpful to help narrow down what your needs are for the search.

Hey, not sure, why you have kept ND "Cincinnati" AND "Ohio" along with you main search keywords! Won’t it restrict some of your search results?

It’s actually recommended to limit location via the filter section and not directly in the search box.

It’s actually recommended to limit location via the filter section and not directly in the search box.

Great callout, @mon2.liu - there’s a tiny bit of nuance between using location filters vs. using location names as keywords in boolean - I just want to clarify here what the difference is. Let’s take a look at @Maria Dehne’s search as our example. Specifically, the search parameters set in the first parenthetical:

(“Aubrey Rose Foundation” AND “Cincinnati” AND “Ohio”)

Leaving the rest of the query aside for now, let’s look at just this single snippet. In this instance, we are querying the search to find any mentions of the full name “Aubrey Rose Foundation” when it appears with both the word “Cincinnati” and “Ohio.” This means that no matter where a mention is coming from in the world, if it includes all three keywords (Aubrey Rose Foundation, Cincinnati, and Ohio), it will show up in the search.

I ran a search with the query ("Aubrey Rose Foundation" AND "Cincinnati" AND "Ohio") and set the time frame to the past year and selected the All Sources | News filter set. Here is what my search results looked like:

So only 4 mentions across all news sources over the past year containing all three of my required terms, and these mentions mainly referred to scholarship awards.

Let’s see what happens when I remove Cincinnati and Ohio as keywords, and instead add them as a location filter:

Interesting! So there is only one additional mention (5 total instead of 4), but now we see a different story. These mentions originate from sources local to Cincinnati (the Cincinnati Enquirer, WKRC-TV-Local-12), and instead highlight the Let’s Dance for the Heart of It event that the Aubrey Rose Foundation hosted in Cincinnati back in November. So as you can see, treating Cincinnati, OH as a keyword yielded a different focus from using it as a location filter.

Just for funsies, I tried running a simple search using just “Aubrey Rose Foundation” without any mention of Cincinnati, either as a search term or a location filter, so let’s take a look at those results as well:

Now we have 8 mentions, and as you can see by the AI-Powered Insight, the story has been further broadened to include the scholarship awards we saw in the first search, as well as the dance event from the second search. We also see references to some of the Foundation’s other events and projects like British Car Day and a golf outing.

Of course, this isn’t what I would call an exhaustive or even particularly useful search - I did only hone in on one specific segment of Maria’s boolean, after all! However, I hope this helps to clarify how using location names as search terms differs from using location filters. I think ultimately both applications have important uses, and the art here lies in deciding which (if either!) of these approaches works best for your needs. 🙌

Wow - what a detailed analysis. Thanks so much for sharing. In particular, I use location to filter out my searches because our brands are only relevant to a Canadian context. There are locations in the USA that also share the same name as our city. Even though limiting location reduces the search results, I would yield a higher quality outcome.

Exactly, @mon2.liu! I think you’re using the location filter exactly as intended, and it’s definitely what I would recommend for you to do in your use case. I just wanted to make sure to share as much detail as possible to illustrate the difference between locations as keywords and locations as actual  locations 😄

Through research and with the help of AI, I was able to find additional keywords and programs/campaigns the organization has implemented. AI also helped me find the involvement Active Minds has had in Spanish mental health programs, such as SantaMente! This helped expand my search. One question I have is: should we exclude press releases from our queries as the example format suggests, or do we have the option to include them?

Great job on this! Active Minds is more relevant than ever due to its significant impact on mental health awareness  among young people. Regarding your question about press releases: While the example format might suggest excluding them, you do have the option to include some of it press releases in your queries. Press releases can provide unique keywords about the organization or its initiatives.

I think ultimately both applications have important uses, and the art here lies in deciding which (if either!) of these approaches works best for your needs. 🙌

Wow, thanks so much for this follow up, @Jacinda Espinosa - very helpful and really appreciate it!

Any tips or tricks you discovered/learned from creating this search? Any specific feedback you’re looking for?

I used the AI assistant to suggest more related keywords that I included. I also asked for a complete list of all available content categories in Meltwater so I could exclude one of them. I also included the X account of this organisation to make sure all content published by them was gathered.
