What Is Monitor?

Monitor is Meltwater's real-time media tracking and content management tool. It enables you to watch multiple content streams simultaneously, manage articles as they surface, filter and sort coverage, and take direct action on mentions — all in one place.

 

What you can do with Monitor:

  • Track 15 social media channels, TV & radio, 270,000+ global news sources, print media, and 20,000+ podcasts
  • Create up to five simultaneous content streams powered by Explore searches, tags, media lists, author lists, or RSS feeds

Key Concepts

  • Monitor Landing Page The home screen you see when you first navigate to Monitor. It displays your saved views and recently accessed content streams, giving you a quick entry point to jump back into ongoing monitoring work.

  • Monitor View A saved configuration of content streams, filters, and date range settings. Views are shared across all users on the account and persist between sessions. On accounts with Workspaces enabled, views can be partitioned into user groups.

  • Content Stream A single column within a Monitor View that surfaces results from one or more content sources — such as an Explore search, tag, RSS feed, media list, or author list. Up to five streams can be active in a single view.

  • Explore Search A saved Boolean or keyword search created in Meltwater's Explore module. Explore searches serve as one of the primary inputs when building a Monitor content stream.

  • Media List / Author List Curated lists of specific journalists, publications, or social authors saved in Meltwater. These lists can be used to power a Monitor stream, enabling you to follow what specific people of interest are writing or sharing.

  • RSS Feed An external content feed that can be added as a stream source in Monitor, allowing you to pull in content from third-party publications or company blogs alongside your Meltwater searches.

  • AI Actions A built-in feature that generates an AI-powered overview of your content stream with the click of a button, removing the need to skim through hundreds of mentions manually.

  • Sorting Options Controls how articles are ordered within a stream. Available options include:

    • Date — most recent items first (default)

    • Reach — highest viewership on top

    • Relevance — most applicable content first, based on prominence, reach, and age

    • Sentiment — grouped by Positive, Neutral, Negative, Not Rated

    • Engagement — highest aggregated engagement (threads, shares, reactions)

    • Social Echo — number of X and Facebook shares of editorial articles

    • Prominence — term frequency: how often your keyword appears relative to total word count

    • Views — highest number of X (formerly Twitter) post views

    • NewsGuard Rating — reliability ratings based on nonpartisan journalistic criteria

    • Language, Country, Geo — grouped by language or country metadata

  • Duplicate Detection Meltwater automatically groups syndicated articles that share the same or similar content. You can choose between Exact Matches (same title and very high content similarity) or Similar Matches (some variance allowed), or turn grouping off entirely.

  • Since Last Viewed A date filter option that shows only content that has appeared since the last time you accessed the current view — helping you focus on new mentions without re-reading previously seen results.

  • Digest Reports Automated email distributions containing the latest content results from your saved searches, generated directly from a saved Monitor view.

  • Alerts Notification-based alerts that can be configured from within Monitor to notify you when new content matching your criteria is detected.

  • Favorites Pin A personalized feature that lets you star specific searches, tags, views, or RSS feeds so they appear at the top of Monitor's drop-down menu — visible only to you, not shared account-wide.

  • Profile Previews Author profile panels that open directly within Monitor when you click an author's name. They display audience size, recent articles, areas of expertise, social handles, and contact information for both editorial journalists and X (formerly Twitter) authors.

 

 

Frequently Asked Questions

 

What do I need before I can create a Monitor stream?

You must have at least one saved Explore Search and one saved Media List before you can build a Monitor content stream. Learn more about Creating a Search and Creating a Media List in the Meltwater Community.

 

How many streams can I have in a single Monitor view?

You can add up to five content streams in a single Monitor view. Each stream can draw from up to five content sources (searches, tags, RSS feeds, and author or media lists).

 

Are Monitor views shared across my team?

Yes. Saved Monitor views are shared with all users on the account, similar to saved filter sets. On accounts with Workspaces management enabled, views can be partitioned into specific user groups.

 

How does the Since Last Viewed date filter work?

When selected, this date option shows only the content that has appeared since the last time you accessed the current view. You can save this selection in your view so it is automatically applied each time you return.

 

How often do streams refresh automatically?

Streams refresh automatically at 1-minute intervals by default. You can change the auto-refresh interval using the dropdown next to the refresh button in the toolbar, or manually refresh all streams at once with a single click.

 

What is Social Echo?

Social Echo is the number of X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook shares of an editorial article. Sorting by Social Echo displays articles that have been most widely shared across those platforms.

 

Can I hide articles I don't want to see?

Yes. You can hide individual articles or bulk-hide multiple selected articles. Hidden articles are removed from your results across the entire platform — including other searches and reporting. You can also reveal hidden articles at any time by clicking the Hidden Articles toggle in the stream header.

 

How do I override the sentiment assigned to an article?

Click the sentiment button in the bottom right corner of any result card to override the sentiment. This change is reflected wherever that article appears in your reporting, tags, and exports.

 

What is the Kebab menu?

The three-dot (kebab) menu on each article card provides sharing and action options: share via email, post to X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, or LinkedIn, create an impact report, translate, or hide the article.

 

Can I export content from Monitor?

Yes. You can download a CSV, Excel, or PDF export of individual streams or bulk-selected content. Learn more about Exporting Content in the Meltwater Community.

 

What is NewsGuard Rating?

NewsGuard ratings are reliability scores for news outlets, based on nonpartisan journalistic criteria. Sorting by NewsGuard Rating allows you to surface content from more (or less) credible sources at the top of your stream.

How to Create a Monitor Content Stream

Use this when: You want to start monitoring content from one or more Explore searches, tags, media lists, author lists, or RSS feeds.

 

  1. Select the Monitor drop-down from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select Views.
  3. Click Create Monitoring View.
  4. Select your Searches and Tags as content sources.
  5. Add a Stream Title.
  6. Apply additional filters such as Source Type, Location, Language, or Sentiment (optional).
  7. Click Create Content Stream.
  8. To add more streams to the view, click + to the right of the existing stream or click Add stream at the top right. Repeat for up to five streams total.
  9. Once a stream is created, click Edit directly in the stream header to edit the stream's inputs, filters, or name.
  10. Click Apply changes when finished.

 

Result: Your Monitor stream is live and will begin surfacing content matching your selections. Use the stream header options to sort, filter, or take action on content as it arrives.

 

 

How to Save a Monitor View

Use this when: You have set up one or more streams and want to save the configuration so you and your team can return to it later.

 

  1. After completing steps 1-10 above, select the Save drop-down in the top right-hand corner.
  2. Click Save as.
  3. Enter a name for your Monitor view.
  4. Click Save. The saved view will now appear in the drop-down menu in the top left of the toolbar.
  5. Return to the Monitor Landing Page by selecting the back arrow to access and manage your saved views.

 

Note: Monitoring views are shared with all users on the account. On accounts with Workspaces management enabled, they can be partitioned into user groups.

 

Result: Your view is saved and accessible to your team. It will appear in the drop-down where you can see recently accessed and saved views, delete or favourite the current view, and browse by Labels, Explore Searches, Tags, Media Lists, and Author Lists.

 

 

How to Edit an Existing Content Stream

Use this when: You want to change the saved searches or add additional content sources to a stream you have already created.

 

  1. Select the Monitor drop-down from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select Views.
  3. Click Edit on the content stream you want to make changes to
  4. Select the Searches and Tags drop-down
  5. Using the tick boxes, select up to five content sources from across searches, tags, RSS feeds, and author and media lists for this stream.
  6. Click Save Changes

 

Pro tip: You can click directly into each input listed at the top of the stream to open a drop-down, allowing you to edit a specific input without reconfiguring the whole stream.

 

Result: The stream is updated immediately. New content matching your revised inputs will begin appearing in the stream.

 

 

How to Adjust the Date Range and Refresh Streams

Use this when: You want to change the time period for the content displayed across all your streams, use the Since Last Viewed feature, or manually refresh your streams.

 

Modifying the Date Range

  1. Select the Monitor drop-down from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select Views.
  3. Click the date range selector in the toolbar.
  4. Choose from the available preset options or select a custom date range.
  5. The selection applies to all streams. Recent custom date ranges will remain available in the date picker.
  6. Remember to save your view if you want to persist the date range selection.

 

Using the Since Last Viewed Feature

 

  1. Select the Monitor drop-down from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select Views.
  3. Open the date range selector.
  4. Select Since last viewed. You will now see only content that appeared since the last time you accessed the view.
  5. Save your view to preserve this setting for future sessions.

 

Refreshing Your Streams

  1. Select the Monitor drop-down from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select Views.
  3. Click Refresh to instantly update all streams with the latest content.
  4. To change the auto-refresh interval, click the dropdown next to the refresh button and select your preferred frequency.

 

Result: Streams are updated with the content matching your selected date range. When streams refresh (manually or automatically), new document indicators appear showing where fresh content has arrived.

 

 

How to Sort and Manage Stream Content

Use this when: You want to change how articles are ordered in your stream or access display and duplicate grouping settings.

 

Use the icons at the top of each stream to sort and manage content:

  • Download — Export a CSV or PDF of selected coverage.
  • Display — Toggle between Default and Compact view. Compact removes details except title and preview, showing more content per stream without scrolling.
  • Duplicates Settings — Choose to group items by Exact Matches, Similar Matches, or Don't group items.
  • Hidden Articles — Reveals articles that have been hidden by users on the account. Click again to re-hide.
  • Sort — Select from Date, Reach, Relevance, Sentiment, Engagement, Social Echo, Prominence, Views, NewsGuard Rating, Language, Country, or Geo. Check Ascending to reverse the order.
  • Find — Opens a search bar to search within the stream by name, keyword, source, or print page number.

 

Note: Sorting options default back to Date (most recent first) whenever you change your search.

 

Result: Your stream is sorted and displayed according to your selections. Adjust at any time without affecting other streams in the view.

 

 

How to Filter Monitoring Views

Use this when: You want to narrow down the content displayed in your Monitor view by applying additional filters such as Source Type, Location, Language, or Sentiment.

 

  1. Select the Monitor drop-down from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select Views.
  3. Open an existing Monitor view or create a new one.
  4. Click Edit
  5. Select Show Filters at the top of the view.
  6. Click All Filters.
  7. Click the checkboxes to the left of the filters you want to apply.
  8. Select Apply.
  9. Click Save Changes

 

Result: The view is filtered and will display only content matching your selected criteria. Filters persist with your view when saved.

 

 

How to Take Action on Individual Articles

Use this when: You want to tag, share, hide, translate, or otherwise act on a single article directly from the content stream.

 

For each article, social post, or other piece of content, the following action icons appear on the result card:

  • Author name — Click to open the author's profile preview directly within Monitor.
  • Open author profile icon — Click the encircled person icon to open the author's profile preview panel on the right. Editorial authors and X (formerly Twitter) handles open different profile types.
  • Open in a new tab — Loads the full content page in a new browser tab.
  • Content Analysis — Opens an insights card surfacing top entities, entity-level sentiment, author profile, and X engagement in one view. Available for editorial content with reach and X posts.
  • Add to Newsletter — Adds the article directly to a Newsletter you are building.
  • Tag — Applies a tag to group this content. Tagged content can power dashboards, newsletters, and Monitor streams.
  • Kebab menu — Provides options to Share (via email), Post to X / Facebook / LinkedIn, Create an impact report, Translate, or Hide the article.
  • Sentiment override — Click the sentiment button in the bottom right of the card to correct the sentiment if it was assigned incorrectly.

 

Result: The selected action is applied to the article. Tags and sentiment overrides are reflected across your reporting, exports, and future searches.

 

 

How to Take Action on Bulk-Selected Content

Use this when: You want to apply tags, change sentiment, share, hide, or export multiple articles at once.

 

Select more than one article in a stream to reveal bulk action icons:

  • Sentiment — Change the positive, neutral, or negative rating for all selected articles. The change is reflected in reporting, tags, and exports.
  • Share — Share selected articles via email. You can share up to 100 articles at a time.
  • Add to Newsletter — Adds all selected articles to a Newsletter you are building.
  • Tag — Applies a tag to all selected articles for grouping and downstream use.
  • Hide — Removes all selected articles from your results across the entire platform.
  • Download — Export selected articles as CSV, Excel, or PDF.
  • Kebab menu — Post to X / Facebook / LinkedIn, or Translate all selected articles.

 

Result: The selected action is applied to all chosen articles at once. Bulk actions are reflected platform-wide in reporting, exports, and future searches.

 

 

How to Follow People of Interest Using Monitor

Use this when: You want to track what specific journalists, social authors, or other contacts are publishing or sharing, using your saved Media Lists or Author Lists.

 

  1. Select the Monitor drop-down from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select Views.
  3. Open an existing Monitor view or create a new one.
  4. Click Edit
  5. Select the Searches and Tags drop-down
  6. Using the tick boxes, select Author Lists as the content source for that stream.
  7. Click Apply
  8. Select Save Changes
  9. The stream will now surface articles written by, or posts shared by, the people in your list.

 

Result: Your stream is powered by your list. You will see content authored by or mentioning the specific people you track, updated in real time as Monitor refreshes.

 

 

How to Create Digest Reports and Alerts from Monitor

Use this when: You want to automate email distributions of your Monitor results or set up notifications when new content matching your criteria arrives.

 

  1. Select the Monitor drop-down from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select Views.
  3. Navigate to your saved Monitor view.
  4. In the toolbar, click Create Digest or Create Alert
  5. Fill in all necessary fields
  6. Click Save

 

Result: Your Digest Report or Alert is created and linked to the current Monitor view. Distributions and notifications will be sent according to your configured schedule and criteria.

 

 

How to Manage Duplicate Articles and Grouping Options

Use this when: You want to control how syndicated articles are grouped and displayed in your Monitor streams.

 

  1. Select the Monitor drop-down from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select Views.
  3. Click Display Options
  4. Navigate to Include Similar Matches. Select between:
    1. Exact Matches
    2. Similar Matches
    3. Don't group items

Note: Your duplicate grouping selection is saved and remembered for when you access the view in future sessions.

 

Result: Meltwater surfaces the version with the highest syndicated reach when duplicates are grouped. You can click on the Content Analysis Card to open the document and take further action such as tagging, sharing, or posting.
