Explore Core: Clean Up the Noise

In Explore Core: Building Effective Searches, you learned how to refine a search by removing irrelevant content. Here is a safe place where you can practice your new knowledge. You can also practice in Explore and test your search to see if you are getting the results you expected.

How it works

  1. Build or edit the Boolean search.
  2. Add your solution as a reply below.
  3. Once you post your reply, compare your solution with other learners.
  4. We’ll send you the answer key.

Let’s Practice

You can write the Boolean yourself or describe what you’d ask the AI Search Assistant to change.

Clean up Crumbl 🍪

Your currently monitoring the brand Crumbl Cookies:

(“Crumbl Cookies” OR Crumbl OR Crumble)

Your search includes the keyword Crumble to catch a common misspelling, but now you’re pulling in results about apple crumble, crumble topping, crumble cake, fruit crumble.

Update the Boolean query to remove the irrelevant content while keeping useful Crumbl mentions.

I still find this a bit tricky, but I’ll give it a try:

("Crumbl Cookies" OR Crumbl OR "Crumble Cookies") NOT ("apple crumble" OR "crumble topping" OR "crumble cake" OR "fruit crumble")

I agree with @Sofie KH this one was tricky. I think I would have to watch the keywords in Explore and look at other metrics to make sure the search doesn’t need to be refined more:

("Crumbl Cookies" OR "Crumbl Cookie" OR Crumbl OR Crumbls OR CrumblCookies OR "Crumble Cookies" OR "Crumble Cookie" OR #CrumblCookies OR #CrumblCookie

OR (Crumble XNOT ("apple crumble" OR "fruit crumble" OR "fruit crumbles" OR "crumble topping" OR "crumble cake" OR "crumble cakes" OR "berry crumble" OR "peach crumble" OR "rhubarb crumble" OR "crumble recipe" OR "crumble recipes")))

This does look more complete than my attempt! @Victoria Elbers , what's the correct answer please? 😊

@Cheyenne is the keeper of the answer key, so I’ll let her DM it to you both 😊

This exercise is definitely a tricky one! Search cleanup is continuous journey because you’re striving to strike a balance between removing irrelevant noise - like “crumble topping” - without being so restrictive that you miss potentially relevant content.

On top of that, you’re trying to predict the future of language. For all we know, Crumbl Cookies might release a line of fruit crumble cookies tomorrow!

Building a robust baseline takes time, but finding that sweet (🍪) spot is key to clean data.
