You’ve just logged into Meltwater and you’re ready to start tracking your brand, your competitors, and that emerging industry trend you just read about. But then the question hits:
“Wait... do I only get 5 searches? Why can’t I create more?”
Let’s clear that up!
Search Limits: What You Actually Need to Know
Search limits are based on your account package, not the number of user seats.
That means:
- Your team shares a pool of saved searches
- The number of saved searches available depends on the package your organization purchased
- You might see fewer available if some are already in use
To check your account’s current search allowance, you can:
- Ask Mira Companion, your in-app AI companion

- Or go to Account in the left-hand navigation
But Don’t Worry, You Have Unlimited Ad Hoc Searching!
Just want to test a keyword or quickly check coverage for a one-off news story? Every Meltwater user can run as many ad hoc (unsaved) searches as they like.
These are perfect for:
- Testing new search logic before saving
- Reading full-text coverage (like that New York Times article)
- Exploring a topic before deciding if it needs a dashboard or alert
Example Ad Hoc Search
Let’s say you want to see what the New York Times is saying about climate change. You could run this quick Boolean in Advanced Search:
site:nytimes.com AND ("climate change" OR "global warming")
No need to save it—just search, skim the results, and move on!
In Summary
Search Type | Limit | Where It’s Used |
Saved Searches | Based on account package | Explore, Dashboards, Alerts, Reports |
Ad Hoc Searches | Unlimited for all users | Testing, research, one-off lookups |
📣 Pro Tip: When you're not sure if something deserves a saved slot, start with an ad hoc search. You’ll still get full access to articles, filters, and result previews—no commitment needed!
